Gorilla Glue #4 Strain Review: The Stickiest Legend in Cannabis
Gorilla Glue #4 is one of those strains that needs no introduction. It won the Michigan and Los Angeles Cannabis Cups back to back, built a reputation that crossed every border in the cannabis world, and spawned an entire family of crosses that dominate seed bank catalogs to this day. Gorilla Cookies, the strain this site is named after, is a direct descendant.
But hype aside, does GG4 still hold up in 2026? Absolutely.
Genetics and Origin
GG4 was created accidentally. The breeder Joesy Whales was growing Chem Sister plants that hermied and pollinated his Sour Dubb. He almost threw the seeds away. Instead, he grew them out and crossed the result with Chocolate Diesel. The outcome was a resin monster that produced more trichomes than almost anything anyone had seen.
The "Gorilla Glue" name came from the fact that the buds were so sticky with resin that they literally glued scissors shut during trimming. The strain was later officially renamed "GG4" after a trademark dispute with the actual Gorilla Glue adhesive company, but everyone still calls it Gorilla Glue.
Flavor and Aroma
GG4 hits you with diesel and earth the moment you open the jar. There's a sharp chemical note from the Chem Sister genetics, grounded by the chocolatey richness from the Chocolate Diesel parent. The Sour Dubb adds a sour, piney undertone that rounds out the profile.
On the inhale, expect pungent diesel with earthy pine. The exhale is smoother with chocolate and coffee notes lingering. This is not a fruity or sweet strain. It's raw, funky, and unapologetic.
The dominant terpenes are caryophyllene (peppery, spicy), myrcene (earthy, sedative), and limonene (citrus, mood elevation). The caryophyllene content is notably high, which is interesting because caryophyllene is the only terpene that also binds to CB2 receptors, potentially adding anti-inflammatory effects on top of the high.
Effects
GG4 typically tests between 25-30% THC, with some phenotypes pushing past 30%. This is not a casual smoke for low-tolerance users.
The high starts in the head with a wave of euphoria and mental relaxation. Within 15-20 minutes, it spreads to the body and locks you down. This is a classic "couch-lock" strain. The Sour Dubb genetics bring a happy, giggly quality to the initial onset, but the back half is pure physical sedation.
Best used in the evening or when you have nowhere to be. Trying to be productive on GG4 is a losing battle.
Medical applications: Pain relief is where GG4 really shines. The combination of high THC and heavy myrcene content makes it effective for chronic pain, muscle spasms, and inflammation. It's also commonly used for insomnia and stress.
Growing GG4
GG4 is a moderately challenging grow. It rewards attention but punishes neglect harder than more forgiving strains.
Flowering time: 8-9 weeks indoors. Outdoor harvest in mid-October in the northern hemisphere.
Yield: 450-550g per square meter indoors. Up to 600g per plant outdoors in optimal conditions.
Height: Medium to tall. Expect 100-150cm indoors, taller outdoors. Benefits from topping and LST to control height and increase light penetration.
Climate: Prefers warm, dry conditions. Humidity control during flower is critical because the dense bud structure is prone to mold if humidity stays above 50%.
Difficulty: Moderate. The main challenges are humidity management during flowering and the plant's tendency to stretch during the first two weeks of flower (the "stretch"). Plan for the stretch by leaving headroom or training aggressively during veg.
Resin production: Extreme. GG4 produces some of the heaviest trichome coverage of any strain. This makes it excellent for hash, rosin, and other concentrate production. Your trim will be worth keeping.
GG4 vs Gorilla Cookies
Gorilla Cookies is a cross of GG4 and Girl Scout Cookies (GSC). The GSC genetics add sweetness to the flavor profile and balance the effects so they're less sedative and more versatile. Gorilla Cookies is also easier to grow, with better mold resistance and a more manageable height.
If you want maximum resin and a knockout body high, GG4 is the pick. If you want a more balanced experience with sweeter flavor and easier cultivation, Gorilla Cookies takes it.
Where to Buy GG4 Seeds
Most major seed banks carry GG4 genetics. Seedsman, ILGM, and Fast Buds all stock autoflower and photoperiod versions. The autoflower version finishes faster but produces slightly less resin than the photoperiod original.

Verdict
GG4 earned its legendary status and it still holds up. The resin production is unmatched, the effects are powerful and reliable, and the genetics have proven stable across thousands of grows worldwide. It's not the easiest strain to grow and the flavor profile won't appeal to everyone who prefers fruity terps. But for what it does well, nothing does it better.
If you're growing for concentrates or extracts, GG4 should be in your garden at least once.
